Product Description

NB: Fakes come with faded tiles and hilariously mispelt, irregular cards. For more information, see https://czechgames.com/en/home/news-18-01-26-fake-codenames/ Pictures show the slightly dented copy of the game at the right side of the front of the box. Codenames is a 20 minute party game for 2 teams of players where 1 spymaster player from each team has to give 1 word clues to his or her team so that the team can guess a total of 8 or 9 words out of a total of 25 word card, while avoiding 8-9 of the opponent team’s words, 7 neutral words, and 1 assassin taboo word. The conceit of the game is that guess any of the opponent’s words or neutral words immediately end the team’s turn, making word guess deliberate and ordered from most confident to least, as well as guessing words that you miss from previous turns. The game ends when a team has guessed all the words, or when the assassin word was guessed by one (losing) team. Codenames plays like two opposing spies behind enemy who both possess the same list of opponent spies mostly ridiculous codenames, but now must race to encrypt and send the same list to headquarters before the other or risk being caught. The best part of Codenames comes from being in sync with your teammates and using in-jokes or shared life experiences to give 1 clue relating to 4-5 words on the grid, where even the opponent team will applaud. Codenames can be very stressful on the spymaster player, who is tasked with the most responsibility in the game as only he or she can come up with clues to help his or her team. If a spymaster plays safe or given such a mismatched set of words that he or she is forced to give clues to 1-2 words per round, or if the spymaster’s team just can’t get going with any correct guesses, the game become deflating rather fast. The two Codenames alternatives are variants on the base game: Codename Pictures makes the game easier for casual players by using pictures and removing the presence of taboo words, while Codenames Duet shares the clue-giving load amongst all players present by making the game a cooperative one and allowing players to both give clues and guess answers. Other guessing type games that play with more than 8 players and generate laughter include Dixit, Deception, Telestrations, A Fake Artist Goes To New York, and Time’s Up Title Recall. Word cards require 200 Mini European sleeves (45 x 68mm), Key cards require 40 Medium Square sleeves (70 x 70mm), and Agent Tiles require 25 50 x 75mm card sleeves. #gameoftheyearwinner #partygames #morethanten
