For more information, please see: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1803276/how-spot-counterfeit-splendor Splendor is a 45-60 minute light strategy game for 2-4 players where players are Renaissance merchants trying to race to 15 prestige points by attracting nobles or acquiring cards representing ships, shops, and gem mines. On each players turn, they either take 2 of the 5 gem currencies from the market, 3 different coloured gems, reserve a card and take a wild-coloured yellow gem, or pay for 1 of the 12 cards available on the board. As each card is also coloured in the one of the 5 gem currencies, once a player pays the cost of the card in gems to the market, the card then reduces the cost of future cards in the card’s colour by one. Once a handful of cards are purchased with gems, the game snowballs quickly as later cards are often purchased for free. Nobles carrying prestige points are also awarded when players have specific numbers of gems on their cards. Splendor plays like a battle royale of merchants, funded by an unknown benefactor with nigh unlimited funds out to show the Renaissance world the true meaning of capitalistic monopolies. Merchants dip into the market to hoard certain coloured gems, depriving others and also gaining the most renown by building up a collection of mines, ships, and shops of a single variety. When out of the running for a particular gem mine, ship, or shop, the remaining merchants scrap like Scrouges for the remaining ones available. Both the highs and lows in Splendor is when players deprive others of resources and cards, hoarding the limited market gems, taking cards that others are eyeing, and falling so far into a tit for tat struggle that another player ends up winning. The closest challenger to Splendor is Century Spice Road/Century Golem edition, a 30 minute game of spices conversion to meet contracts. Century Eastern Wonders is another game that involves spice conversion and contract fulfillment, but adds spatial complexity in the form of a modular board. Lighter and advanced alternatives include Jaipur and Race for the Galaxy respectively. Cards require 90 Standard card sleeves (63.5mm X 89mm) #bestbeginnergames
