Now this is a true story for the part
occurred on the top floor of this
Bigwig executive's office in Nashville, Tennessee
Now understand I'm not poking any fun or anybody
God knows I love country music with all my heart and
And I love the Grand Ole
But I do a problem with someone who
Can't even a D chord on a guitar
someone with a dream that they won't get far
So song is dedicated to all those underdogs like me
Out there running
get discouraged if you have a dream
Don't be to chase it down
how it goes

He said, "Son, don't get offended by I'm about to say
I can see you have a
For the you write and play
But you lack we all call commercial appeal
And you just don't have what it
To it here in Nashville"

Well my heart felt a train wreck
But I wore a smile on my
I said, "Thank you for time, sir"
Put my back in its case
Our little conversation was a revelation
my dreams
'Cause God knows I'd never sell my soul to rock 'n'
Or rap or wear those tight jeans

you know I'd rather sing my own songs
Than be a puppet on a
I'll wear I want to wear
I'm gonna sing what I wanna
Heaven knows all I
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
I'd rather be an old fence post in Texas
Than the of Tennessee

So I up my old pickup truck
And I drove home to Amarillo
Got a gig off old 66
At this ballroom called The
And for the thousand shows or so
Not a soul up
I thought about every other day
But I kept on kicking that cup

Yeah, I kept kicking can surrounded by
Blood, sweat, and
And you know I became an overnight sensation
In just over ten
And now I'm packing out all the dance
And the rodeos every
I got a wife, a ranch, a band, a bus, a boat
I'd say I'm doing

And you know I'd sing my own songs
Than be a on a string
wear what I want to wear
I'm gonna what I wanna sing
Heaven knows all I
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
Besides I'd rather be an old post in Texas
Than the of Tennessee

Oh, how 'bout a little front porch picking,

Well, wouldn't you know that old man
up one night at this honky tonking bar
After my he said,
"Son, I believe you might be the next big star"
He said, "We how you keep it raw
We how you keeping it real
And I think you may just have
We all like to commercial appeal"
Huh, that something
Well, sir

I'd rather sing my own
be a puppet on a string
I'll wear I want to wear
And I'm gonna sing I wanna sing
Heaven knows all I
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
Besides I'd rather be an old fence post in
Than the king of
God Tennessee
But I'd rather be an old fence post in Texas
Than sell my to rock 'n' roll
Or rap or wear those tight skinny
