In 1951 eight of Yibin’s best traditional distilleries wereconsolidated into a single state-run distillery, the Yibin Distillery(Yibin Wuliangye Distillery after 1959). Distilled from a blend of sorghum, rice, glutinous rice, wheat and corn, its baijiuquickly became the standard-bearer of mixed-grain strong aromabaijiu. On the strength of its premium spirits, Wuliangyehad grown to become China’s biggest distillery by sales volumeby the1990s. Wuliangye became a publiclylisted company in1998 and has interests in several spin-off distilleries, such asJinliufu and Liuyanghe. Ayear later, Yibin’s government began construction on the YibinWuliangye Airport, whose name sparked minorcontroversy.
