What are the differences between 1st Cut, 2nd Cut, and Soft Stem Timothy Hay? 1st cut - Has a high ratio of stem. The stems are also thicker compared to others. The hay usually has light, bright lime green colour. 2nd cut - The most commonly consumed hay. Usually has around 40-60% stem. Generally has a deep, emerald green colour. Soft stem - This is extra leafy, and the stems are soft. Preferred by picky eaters. The colour is usually dark, brownish green with some brown leaves mixed in it. Has a different aroma compared to other Timothy Hays. Important notice: As hay is a natural product, every batch and every pack will be different. The ratio of stems to leaves, the thickness of stems, the greenness, the amount of hay dust will be different from one batch to another.
